The national operator of the Blue Flag programme, the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (EEPF), has announced that 519 beaches and 15 marinas in Greece have been awarded the Blue Flag among 47 countries that participated this year ranking our country in 2nd place in the Blue Flag quality awards. The Region of Halkidiki collected the majority of the awards, a total of 89 flags. Last year, 486 beaches and 12 marinas around Greece were honoured with the quality Blue Flag award. The Blue Flag beach awards are widely considered the gold standard for beaches and are internationally recognised.
Other islands with many awarded beaches are Rhodes, which received 35 Blue Flags, and Zakynthos, with 18. Attica, the regional unit surrounding Athens, received 24 flags, including 4 marinas, despite last summer’s oil spill in the Saronic Gulf.
