Nea Fokea (pop. 2,000), about 12 km south of Kassandra’s most northerly village, Nea Potidea, and 65 or so from Thessaloniki.
The town is built on the site of ancient Potidea, an antiquity city founded by Corinthian colonists around 600 BC, which had a really turbulent history. It is one of the prettiest villages of Halkidiki with great historical background.
It is located near the canal, which is open since 1930 and divides the peninsula from the rest of Halkidiki, 40 km south of Poligiros. It is surrounded by the deep blue waters of Thermaikos and Toroneos Gulf.
Worth-seeing in Nea Potidea are the canal, the ruins of the historical castle and the church of the Taxiarches. Many other remarkable sights can be found in and around the city. Nea Potidea has many restaurants, hotels, bars, cafes, clubs, shops and public services.
Nea Fokea Village Halkidiki
Nea Fokea is a seaside village in the beginning of Kassandra peninsula. It’s 65 km away from Thessaloniki and during the summer months has high tourist traffic, as tourists are visiting the area both for long time vacations and also spend a nice weekend since Nea Fokea is very close to Thessaloniki and has clean beaches, restaurants and taverns with fresh fish. Nea Fokea is located near Sani, a tourist resort which you definitely have to visit during your stay in the area.
For your stay we would suggest you the Villa Madeleine which is located 70 meters from the beach of Nea Fokea and 200 meters from the village center where you can find a lot of shops, bars and restaurants. If you want luxury accommodation we recommend you to stay at Paressa Palace Villas, an excellent modern residential complex located just before the village. Finally there is the Kiwi hotel which is located in the village and has very good reviews from guests.
Nea Fokea was founded by refugees from Mikra Asia after the disaster and the surrounding area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Today Nea Fokea counts 1700 inhabitants who are mainly engaged in tourism and fishing. In the village there are also a police station and a community clinic.
At the port of the village dominates a Byzantine tower with a hight of 17 meters which belong ti the monastery of St. Paul and which during the revolutions of 1821 was the headquarters of the revolution leader in Halkidiki, Emmanuel Papas. The village feast takes place each summer on 29th and 30th of June in celebration of the Apostles Peter and Paul. Also worth mentioning that in the area of the Tower of Nea Fokea take place some artistic events within the Kassandra Festival.
On the 21st of June the organisation committee of this Festival announces the complete program of the year. The Festival of Kassandra is one of the most remarkable, dynamic and well known institutions of the whole country. It takes place every year since 1993 in the Theater of Siviri.
It covers a wide area in field of Arts and Culture from Music, Songs, Dance, Theatrical Performances and Cinema with participants from Greece and abroad as well.
