Nikia Village Nisyros island: The village of Nikia lies 14 km south of Nisyros, about 400m above sea level in the rim of the crater of a semi-dormant volcano. It is a lovely picturesque area, one of the few crowded settlements in the island.

Nikia – authentic place with picturesque square and volcano view; village in Nisyros, Dodecanese Islands.

Nikia has an elliptic shape and offers amazing views over the caldera and the sea. White houses with flat tile roofs, brightly colored doors and windows create an impressive contrast against the black volcanic rocks and the flowered yards.

The famous village square is paved with fine black pebbles (known in the local as hochlakia) which form a beautiful mosaic. It takes about an hour or so to reach the volcano where one can witness the half-dead volcano grumbling and breathing out sulfur fumes. The monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos is worth a visit in the village of Nikia. It hosts ancient wall paintings and rare icons.
