Spilia is a village a few kilometers inland from the coastal town and tourist resort Kolymbari (3 kilometers away). It lies in a green plain amongst citrus trees and olive groves, about 30 kilometers west of the city of Chania. Spilia has around 275 inhabitants.

According to tradition the village was named after the cave (Spilia means “cave”) of Agios Ioannis. In this cave there is a church. According to legend, this was the place where Saint John went to live after he had to flee from the Middle East. On the left wall of the last room is a kind of altar. It is said that this was also used as an altar, and Saint John slept on it as well. The path leads on through a gorge to the monastery Katholiki. The route is marked by a sign (a bit at the end of the village turn right).

In the 12th century Byzantine church of Panagia Spilia in the village there are beautiful frescoes. The church is situated towards the top of the village – first you go up then you turn left – at the end of a road, and there is a small parking lot. The route to the church is signposted.

Besides these two, there are more churches in the village. The whole village, and actually the whole valley in which the village is situated, is dominated by the large new church with its tall bell tower. Furthermore there is a beautiful and somewhat dilapidated church dating back to 1849. There are also in the village a few tavernas, a kafenion and a village shop / supermarket. The number of accommodations in the village is quite limited and consists of several villas with private swimming pool and a hotel.
