Mountain sports in Greece

Change of scene. The action moves to Greece’s mountains. Mountain sports will bring you to another side of Greece’s natural beauty, to lofty peaks, vertical cliffs, white-water gorges, rivers, lakes, forests and trails running through it all. On Kalymnos you’ll find one of the world’s ten best rock-climbing sites, and on Crete you can hike the longest gorge in Europe, Samaria.

Your trekking options are endless; from the mountain of the gods, Olympus, to the pillars of Meteora; from the Greek part of the European trail network crossing the country from end to end, to the ancient Roman roads of Epirus; and from the paths through the forests of Pelion to the donkey trails of the islands, each will etch itself into your mind. If mountain biking is your thing you’ll find excellent routes near big cities, such as Parnitha near Athens, as well as in distant places where you can enjoy pristine nature, such as Litohoro, Samothraki, Karpenisi and Kissavos.

Every season in Greece brings new pleasures. Greece’s ski centres at Parnassos, Kalavryta, Evrytania, Vasilitsa near Grevena will test your downhill skills all winter long while in the summer the melting snow fills rivers such as the Lousios, the Acheloos, the Pineios and Voidomatis, making them ideal for rafting.
