Spring Holidays in Greece and The Greek Islands

Spring break in Greece will be wonderful choice for exploring around main cities. Keep reading our post.

Spring is a fabulous season to visit Greece and for the holidays. Visitors who come to the Greece for their spring break enjoy the warm temperature, the few crowds and the blossoming nature. March in Greece can be a bit cold, but from April and onwards the temperature gets warmer and in May people start swimming in the sea. Spring holidays in Greece is the best choice for relaxing and refreshing.

April and May are the months when the Greek islands wake up from hibernation: ferries from Athens to the Greek islands are becoming more regular, hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops gradually open and the first foreign tourists arrive. Spring is also the season when nature in Greece blossoms, with trees becoming greener and flowers opening their petals.

Spring destinations in Greece

Spring holidays can be very active for visitors. The green nature makes hiking a very popular activity in spring in the Greek islands and many regions of the Greek mainland. Old stone footpaths connect mountainous villages, secluded beaches, ancient sites and hilltops with breathtaking view. Many of these footpaths are signposted. Nice place for hiking and spring holidays are Crete island, Pelion, Kefalonia, Corfu and Naxos island.

Spring is also a good season for river sports in Greece. As the snow melts in the Greek mountains, rivers get filled with running water. This is when many mountaineering clubs in Greece organize rafting, kayaking, river trekking and other activities. Best mainland regions for these sports are Zagoria in Epirus, Arcadia in Peloponnese and Evritania in Central Greece.

Popular destinations in Greece during spring

In the popular summer holiday spots in the Aegean, Ionian and Crete, the Peloponnese, Halkidiki and the Athenian Riviera, the deluxe hotels, wellness resorts, spas and chic B&Bs open before Easter, in April. Whoever is lucky enough to take a holiday in spring and early June will have the legendary beaches to themselves. Also on offer: private tours of archaeological sites and museums, unimpeded strolls on waterfronts and shopping streets, dinners at famous restaurants without having to book, sailing without the angst of finding a mooring in the marinas. Springtime in Greece… who could ask for anything better?

Easter in Greece: the celebration of spring!

Come and experience a real Greek Easter in a place where it is truly exceptional: on Patmos, where the Holy Flame is brought direct from Jerusalem; on Corfu, with its many colourful traditions; on Santorini, where thousands of lamps light up the castle at Pyrgos on Good Friday; on Ios, Syros, Sifnos, Skiathos, Chios (where ‘rockets’ are fired at Vrontado), Folegandros, Leonidio, Kalamata, Arahova, Nafpaktos, Tripoli, Messolongi, and scores of mountain villages.

Local customs, the Ionian marching bands, the solemn Good Friday processions behind a bier decorated in white flowers by parish women, the Ascension ceremony on Easter Eve with its candles and fireworks, the spitted Paschal lamb, and the services in churches, monasteries and chapels will entrance you. Spring in Greece is a celebration – and Easter is the best example of this!

Things to do in spring holidays

Fans of adrenaline-boosting sports will find spring a great time for horseriding, kayaking, rafting and river trekking – from the Arachthos and the Acheloos to the Alpheios, Louisios and Evrotas rivers. The weather during spring in Greece is perfect for outdoor sports and activities in nature. In May, when the mud dries on the dirt roads, the unexplored and pristine mountain regions will reveal their wonders to those who love off-road adventures and the options are many at all levels of difficulty.

Spring packages in the Greek islands

The Greek islands are a wonderful destination for spring holidays. The moderate (not too hot, not too cold) weather, the flowered nature, the authentic villages and the calm atmosphere create ideal conditions for spring vacations. Especially hikers, pensioners and romantic couples who are looking for calm holidays are the most popular group of visitors that come for spring holidays in Greece.

Direct flights from many European airports are also launching their holiday flights to Greece in spring, which gives visitors the chance to go directly to the islands, without passing from Athens.
